Deniz Yonucu

I am an anthropologist working across the fields of law and society studies, political theory, and urban studies. My work focuses on counterinsurgency and policing, surveillance, class, racism, resistance, coloniality and memory. My first book, Police, Provocation, Politics: Counterinsurgency in Istanbul (Cornell University Press, 2022) is the winner of the 2023 Anthony Leeds Prize for the best book in urban anthropology. I have lived, studied, and worked in four different countries (Germany, Turkey, the UK, and the USA) and eight different cities (Berlin, Chicago, Istanbul, Ithaca, London, Munich, Newcastle, and New York).
